Additional Information:
Mary Bowditch Forbes (1878—1962) was the last family member to live permanently in the Adams Street mansion on Milton Hill, now the Forbes House Museum. In 1909, she acquired a commemorative penny released by the U. S. Treasury in honor of the 100th anniversary of President Lincoln's birth (the penny is still on view in the museum today). For the next forty—five years, Ms. Forbes collected President Lincoln and Civil War artworks and memorabilia, which are now part of the museum's permanent collection.

Her nephew, Henry Ashton Crosby Forbes, Ph.D., (1925—2012) curator of Asian export art and founder of the Forbes House Museum, inherited the estate from Ms. Forbes upon her death in 1962. The museum was opened in 1964 as the Museum of the American China Trade.

From 1924 until her death, Ms. Forbes had annual celebrations at the cabin in February and August to commemorate the life of President Lincoln and acknowledge the service of Civil War soldiers.
