Lantern Festival - Family Vacation Week
Event at the FHM
Thursday, February 21, 2008 10 am – noon |
The Lantern Festival, also known as
the Spring Festival, ends the 15-day
celebration of the Chinese New
Year. During this celebration, people make a
fresh start and set the tone for the
upcoming year. The holiday
traditionally brings families together to
celebrate and culminates with the Lantern
Festival.
Gather your family and join your neighbors
for a morning at the Forbes House Museum in
Milton to enjoy this
culturally enriching event. As you find
yourself surrounded by beautiful antique
artifacts brought over from
China by Forbes family members during the
height of the America China Trade, you will
spend enriching
family time making special lanterns,
learning a bit about Chinese tradition and
ring in the Year of the Rat
with family zodiac projects and stories.
Admission is FREE for Family-Level and above
museum members and $5 per child with
mandatory adult
chaperones admitted free of charge. No

was updated in the 1980's. Children in K-3
draw pictures of any media and size on a
topic selected in early
January by the Lincoln Committee. Children
in grades 4-5 have a 300 word max. and
grades 6-8 have a 600 word max. Free to
enter. |

All history buffs and serious students of
history welcome for a lively discussion and
debate of a wide variety of topics relevant
to our nation’s
history. The meeting topics are announced at

25 Treasure Hunt 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. |
This school vacation week event is a self
guided treasure hunt through the museum,
sure to keep pre-K (with help
reading clues) through 5th graders busy and
thinking. A 45-minute game of clue and fact
finding about a chosen topic. After reading
and identifying
the clues, the children will be rewarded
with a "treasure."
Fee: $5 per child ,
non-member; $3 per child, Family-level
member & above.

The House |
Rich in history the Forbes House Museum
(FHM) is more than a historic house; it is a
hub of cultural activity and an educational
resource for the
Greater Boston Community. The Greek Revival
mansion was built in 1833 by Captain Robert
Bennet Forbes, his brother John Murray
Forbes and their
sisters as a gift for their mother.
The
Forbes Family was one of a network of
prominent families who helped shape maritime
and trading history.
Captain Forbes (1804-1889), a China Trade
merchant, spearheaded the expansion of U.S.
trade with China. He amassed an impressive
China Trade
collection while his granddaughter, Mary
Bowditch Forbes, collected Lincoln and Civil
War artifacts.
Today, the FHM shares these
architecturally
significant buildings and cherished
collections with the community, preserving
them for generations to come. 45-minute
guided tours are given to the
public Tuesdays though Thursdays and on
Sundays from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. or by
appointment.

educational tour or program. |

The Collections |
The FHM houses hundreds of fine examples of
Chinese export porcelain, bronzes,
sculptures, rosewood furniture, textiles,
silver and significant
paintings. The extensive Lincoln Collection
includes Lincoln autographs, slavery
documents, photographs, a first edition
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Civil War
journals and our Lincoln Log Cabin replica.

Educational Programs |
|
The FHM brings history to life for students
studying ancient civilizations and American
history. The programs are an integral part
of elementary
school curriculums in numerous public and
private schools in the Boston and South
Shore area. |
|
Natural Environment |
The Museum has a commanding view, across
preservation lands, to Boston Harbor and the
Islands. The ground is rich in history
dating back to Beech
trees planted by the last Royal Governor of
Massachusetts. A more recent addition, the
Island of Infinite Pleasantness, is a
Chinese Meditation
Garden showcasing a variety of plantings
introduced to this country from Asia prior
to 1900.
The grounds are open daily dawn to
dusk, free of charge
for all to enjoy. |
