The House |
Rich in history the Forbes House Museum
(FHM) is more than a historic house; it is a
hub of cultural activity and an educational
resource for the
Greater Boston Community. The Greek Revival
mansion was built in 1833 by Captain Robert
Bennet Forbes, his brother John Murray
Forbes and their
sisters as a gift for their mother.
The
Forbes Family was one of a network of
prominent families who helped shape maritime
and trading history.
Captain Forbes (1804-1889), a China Trade
merchant, spearheaded the expansion of U.S.
trade with China. He amassed an impressive
China Trade
collection while his granddaughter, Mary
Bowditch Forbes, collected Lincoln and Civil
War artifacts.
Today, the FHM shares these
architecturally
significant buildings and cherished
collections with the community, preserving
them for generations to come. 45-minute
guided tours are given to the
public Tuesdays though Thursdays and on
Sundays from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. or by
appointment.
Please call in advance for groups over eight
or to arrange a specifically focused
educational tour or program. |
|
The Collections |
The FHM houses hundreds of fine examples of
Chinese export porcelain, bronzes,
sculptures, rosewood furniture, textiles,
silver and significant
paintings. The extensive Lincoln Collection
includes Lincoln autographs, slavery
documents, photographs, a first edition
Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Civil War
journals and our Lincoln Log Cabin replica.
|
|
Educational Programs |
|
The FHM brings history to life for students
studying ancient civilizations and American
history. The programs are an integral part
of elementary
school curriculums in numerous public and
private schools in the Boston and South
Shore area. |
|
Natural Environment |
The Museum has a commanding view, across
preservation lands, to Boston Harbor and the
Islands. The ground is rich in history
dating back to Beech
trees planted by the last Royal Governor of
Massachusetts. A more recent addition, the
Island of Infinite Pleasantness, is a
Chinese Meditation
Garden showcasing a variety of plantings
introduced to this country from Asia prior
to 1900.
The grounds are open daily dawn to
dusk, free of charge
for all to enjoy. |
