The only way to get inside the Forbes House Museum’s 1833 historic house is to be on a guided tour. Guides give interpretive tours of the house at the scheduled times listed below. Tours cover the 1870’s kitchen and the first and second floors of the house, and they last about 1.5 hours. With its interior restored to a circa 19th-century appearance, the house and the rooms are furnished with original objects owned and used by four generations of Forbes Family members dating back to the 1820’s.
After extensive preparation, the Forbes House Museum embarked on critical preservation work in March 2016 to ensure continued safe ingress and egress at the museum. The project is restoring two of the most distinctive architectural features of the marvelous 1833 historic building — the north entry porch and the elaborate, hexagonal south porch, which incorporates Chinese glazed ceramic blocks into its second-floor balustrade.
During the restoration effort, the museum has suspended its all tours because of the relocation and storage of many collection items. We anticipate resuming our tour schedule in Spring 2017. Check back for updates!
Space is limited to ten people on the standard tour. Reservations are not required, but they are strongly encouraged at least one day in advance. To make a reservation, call 617.696.1815.
